2005 Indianapolis Colts team-signed game model football helmet with 27 signatures including star quarterback Peyton Manning, Dwight Feeney and Edgerrin James. The signatures, in blue marker on the white Riddell helmet, also include Cato June, Corey Simon, Gary Brackett, Nick Harper, Larry Triplett, Brandon Stokely, Jeff Saturday and Bryan Fletcher, among others. The white helmet features a Columbia blue stripe down the top center, facemask, and horseshoe logo decal on each side.
The 2005 Colts improved on their 12–4 record from 2004 and finished the season 14–2. Indianapolis started the season with a 13-game winning streak and were heavily favored to go to and win Super Bowl XL. The Colts' rival, the New England Patriots, lost to the Denver Broncos in the Divisional round of the playoffs. The following night the Colts were favored over the Steelers because they had easily beaten them in their previous meeting. However, the Colts lost their first playoff game to the eventual Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, when placekicker Mike Vanderjagt missed a crucial field goal. The same team they lost to in the playoffs for the first time since 1996, when the Colts were in the AFC wild-card game. The 2005 Colts set an NFL record by winning 12 games in which they never trailed at any point in the contest, a record which still stands.
